This region has always been predominantly engaged in farming .
In terms of art during the Renaissance, it is true that the rural character of the region meant that current examples of artistic expression are limited to certain architectural features such as doorways, windows, heraldry and ornamentation, such as sculptures of the Virgin Mary and altarpieces.
There are also certain buildings such as the country mansion of Los Angulo at Villanueva de Valdegovía which should certainly not be forgotten.
Most worthy of mention during the Baroque period are altarpieces such as those at Villanueva and Astúlez.
More recent periods have not left any architecture of note, but certain constructions such as the trio of basic public services with their fountains, wash-houses and drinking-troughs, reconditioned mills, and so on deserve consideration.
